Dan Coy

Dan Coy

Atlanta-based guitar player

Dan Coy (born December 3, 1953) is a self-taught guitarist based in Atlanta GA. His playing is grounded in jazz and blues; he has performed and recorded with a wide range of musicians.

Coy was born in Columbus, Ohio and began playing guitar at the age of 14. His influences as a guitar player include Jimi Hendrix, T-Bone Walker, Django Reinhardt, and Wes Montgomery.

Coy began performing with bands in 1971 and has been a band leader since 1975.

The Dan Coy Trio (sometimes a quintet, quartet, or duo) is an intuitive and improvising rhythm section in pursuit of a specific aesthetic vision. It is a vision based on the respect of the swing, bebop and blues language, but delivered with the underlying enthusiasm and exuberance of rock musicians.

The Dan Coy Trio enjoys maintaining a firm grasp of the jazz tradition while basing the band's collective spontaneous creativity on compositions by composers ranging from Thelonius Monk to Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis to Michael Jackson, Django Reinhardt to Nirvana, Cole Porter to Jimi Hendrix... you get the idea.
